Art Saves Lives - James Canfield II
James Canfield: Lithograph Series (2002-2004)
Between 2002 and 2004, James Canfield created a series of politically charged lithographs that blend pop art aesthetics with pointed social commentary. Working with clip art-inspired imagery, Canfield transformed familiar visual language into subversive statements on American culture, labor, and personal freedom.
Pieces like "I am Sofa King, We Todd Did," "I Believe in Free Will," and "Art Saves Lives" demonstrate his ability to pair bold graphics with layered meanings—sometimes humorous, sometimes confrontational, always deliberate. The series includes "Ban the Bomb," "Detroit" (with the tagline "the weak are killed and eaten"), and "Don't Be a Wanker," showcasing Canfield's range from anti-war messaging to working-class commentary.
Each piece in this collection is a numbered edition lithograph, hand-pulled, signed, and dated by Canfield. The entire series represents a concentrated creative period where he refined his voice as a printmaker working at the intersection of fine art and street-level visual culture.
